R.N.), Defence Medal, Fire Brigade Long Service Medal (FIREMAN CHARLES G. JOURDEN), Royal Fleet Reserve Long Service and Good Conduct Medal ( SS. 6169 (CH. B. 16101) C. G. JOURDEN. A. B. R.F.R.). (6) Jourden joined the Royal Navy July 1915 and served on H.M.S. Prince Rupert until November 1917, HMS Lucia then Vulcan and Walling. He joined the Royal Fleet Reserve 4th August 1920. The majority of his Great War service was on HMS Prince Rupert which was primarily used for bombarding the Belgian coast during 1915–1917, rather than serving at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. She was equipped with heavy 12-inch guns designed for shallow-water shore support, distinct from the fleet battleships. Medals issued ADM 171/107. The 1921 Census confirms that Jourden worked as a sailor on an Iron Ore Smelter for the Linthorpe Dinsdale Smelting Company, Middlesborough. At this time he is married with one daughter. He had a second daughter in 1923. The 1939 Census confirms him as a Fireman living in Fireman’s Quarters in Middlesbrough. Charles George Jourden was born 3rd February 1897 in Islington, London. He died in Cleveland in 1987.
