Comes with an unnamed Army Temperance Medal (India). At Paardeberg the Shropshire Light Infantry did excellent work. On the night of the 21st they made, what General Colvile called, “a fine advance to within 550 yards of the Boer trenches”, and by spade-work this distance was subsequently diminished. At Paardeberg the battalion had about 50 casualties. August 1914, 2nd Battalion, KSLI. were in Secunderabad, India. They returned to England, landing at Plymouth in November 1914. Moved to Winchester and came under orders of 80th Brigade in 27th Division. 21 December 1914 : landed at Le Havre. 2nd Shropshires served initially with 80th Brigade 27th Division base Depot, WO Class II (Colour Sergeant) 5541 Talbot serving in Y Company (1914). He served 16 years 345 days in the ranks and was then commissioned, 2nd Lieutenant, 15th December 1914, Lieut 1st October 1915. He had entered France 20th December 1914.
