Description Truly exceptional and genuinely scarce Victorian Campaign medal group to The Rifle Brigade. The 1st Battalion, 2 clasp Canada General Service Medal (one of 69 of the 2 clasp Canadian Fenian Raid 1866 and 1870 clasps to the 1st Battalion) with the 4 Battalion India General Service Medal with Jowaki 1877-8 clasp and Afghanistan Ali Musjid medals. This appears to be one of 2 such campaign medal groups groups involving men transferring from 1st Battalion to 4th Battalion to earn this combination of medals and clasps. With the specific confirmation of Palmer’s Long Service Medal this is possibly a unique group.awarded. Medal campaign group of Alfred Palmer, of Portsmouth, Hampshire. The medals are all on original ribbon and all have a black cotton loop sewn in on which the medals would have been loosely suspended on a large pin. Medals – Canada General Service Medal with Fenian Raid 1866 and Fenian Raid 1870 clasps (206 PTE. A. PALMER. 1. R. B.). India General Service Medal with Jowaki 1877-8 clasp (2622 A/CPL. ALFRED PALMER. 4BN. RIFLE BDE.). Afghanistan Medal 1881 with Ali Musjid clasp (2622 PLE. CORPL. A. PALMER. 4TH RIFLE BDE.) Long Service and Good Conduct Medal (2622 PTE, A, PALMER. 4TH RIFLE BDE.) Born near Whitchurch, Hampshire, Palmer attested for the Rifle Brigade 25th October 1858. The 1st Bn Rifle Brigade Canada General Service Medal roll, dated September 6th 1899 confirms the medal with 2 clasps to 206 Alfred Palmer giving his address as 104 High Street, Portsmouth, Hampshire. After the Canada campaign Palmer transferred, renumbered 2622, to the 4th Battalion, The Rifle Brigade on the 18th October 1873. He was promoted to Lance Corporal October 1875 and promoted further to Corporal June 1879. He was awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct medal as confirmed on his discharge papers. The Jowaki and Ali Musjid medals are also confirmed on the respective medal rolls for the 4th Battalion, The Rifle Brigade. His discharge papers confirm that he was finally discharged 22nd June 1880 after 21 years of service. He joined the Rifle Brigade at Winchester 25th October 1858 at the age of 23 years. His intended place of residence being Portsmouth, Hampshire. He married on Portsea Island, Hampshire in July 1880, to Celia Carpenter (widow of Amos Carpenter, nee Carlton). She and Alfred had 3 daughters and one son, Alfred Percy Cecil Palmer. 1901 Census the family is living in Campbell Road, Portsmouth. Alfred Palmer snr died in Portsmouth in October 1902 aged 68 years old. He served overseas for two extended periods – Canada 8 years 9 months and India 6 years 6 months. These papers also confirm his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. Selling with his son’s Royal Navy Great War 1914/15 Star medal trio with Long Service and Good Conduct medal. Medals to M. 6029. VERNON on Long Service Medal Alfred Percy Cecil Palmer, born 1890 in Portsmouth, Hampshire served the majority of the Great War on H.M.S. Monarch on which he saw action as a confirmed veteran of the Battle of Jutland. He served from 27th May 1913 then pensioned 26th May 1935. Further served E.A. Royal Fleet Working Party,  26th April 1937 to 13th June 1940 when invalided as E A 1 (pens), P.U.N.S.(permanently unfit for Naval Service). He died in Hilsea, Portsmouth, 1960.
