Having served in South Africa he re-enlisted at the outbreak of the Great War and he entered France 15th April 1915 as Corporal later promoted B.Q.M. Sjt. Of note he was involved in the unsuccessful rescue of a suicide at Bolton Woods Canal as reported in the Leeds Mercury 11th November 1904.
