Description India General Service Medal 1854 with PERAK clasp named to J. BAMFORD. Lg SEAn  H.M.S. MODESTE, sold with copy papers Bamford was born in London, April 14th 1842 and entered the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class (No. 30964) serving on H.M.S. Waterloo September 1856. He served until 1870 when he continued, re-numbered 13210. He continued to serve until 1877, having served on HMS Modeste 5th August 1875 to 6th December 1876. He appears on Census returns living in Bridport, Dorset with the 1911 Census recording him as a Naval Pensioner. In the 1881 Census he is on the crew of the Schooner Saltram , at Portland, Weymouth, Dorset. Papers further record him on the crew of the Lilian of Bridport. Medal roll confirms his entitlement. Bamford is recorded in the Ship’s Medical Journal as suffering prolonged diarrhoea due to which he lost 27 lbs in three months – see Journal extract below. ADM 101 – Admiralty and predecessors: Office of the Director General of the Medical Department of the Navy and predecessors: Medical Journals – Subseries within ADM 101 – EAST INDIES AND CHINA STATION – ADM 101/196 – Medical and surgical journal of HMS Modeste for 1 January 1876 to 31 / Reference:         ADM 101/196/2 Folio 9: Joseph Bamford, aged 34; leading seaman; case number 47; disease or hurt, debility and diarrhoea. Put on sick list, 30 August 1876 with debility resulting from several late intractable attacks of diarrhoea. Patient had lost 27lbs in three months. Discharged for further treatment on 12 September 1876.
